There are multiple triangular holes on one side of the blade which is used for small fine curling. The other side has a serrated, slightly sharp blade for easy cutting. The top side of the blade has a bigger hole for big coarse curls. This comes handy for solid bread, pav, butter, or cheese that has been just removed from the refrigerator. You can even spread jam, chutney, mayonnaise, melted chocolate, thick paste, cake whipped cream, etc.
